Only Money
Raj Kumar Baral
I could never understand the meaning of God nor could I be assured on His existence. When I was a student or as a teacher I have heard a lot about Him, sometimes as the Creator of the entire universe who with the decrees like, "let there be light, hill, oceans . . .", (in Christianity) could create anything of His desire and as the Nurturer and Destroyer at other times in different guises like Vishnu and Mahesh in Hindu mythology. Again, declaration of His 'death', (though metaphorically, which I learnt later) had baffled me seriously in those early days as a novice theory learner.

My understanding about gods, if they really do exist is— they transcend the worldly things, have transcendental values and they can’t be evaluated in terms of any material things. But I find my understanding gone ashtray when I go or happen to reach the vicinity of temples and religious shrines like Pashupatinath or Daksinkali, where I am found rounded and surrounded by some shopkeepers who want to sell their pooja samagri (materials for worshipping) by hook or crook. In observation, almost every time I see the same amount of materials; flowers, coconut, leaves of flower etc. in their plates but there is a fierce competition among themselves in selling even by lessening the price. The shop-surrounding looks like a place for perfect competition.  To attract the people/pilgrims (?) like me towards their shop (not others), they heartily ask to wash hands with the water offered by them. Such incidents instigate multiple questions: what is the actual price of those materials for worshipping? Do they, in fact, have any price? Why is there competition in lessening the price while selling their worshiping materials? More seriously, do Gods themselves have prices? Do expensive worshipping materials make Gods happier than the cheaper one? I don’t have answers of these questions till date.

This is not the only incident that baffles me. The advertising agencies too are found busy in reifying religion and deities being motivated by economic boon and social recognition. Not only an object but the idea of spirituality itself becomes a commodity when it is valued vis-a-vis exchange value or sign-exchange value. Similarly, 'images' of deities have been tattooed on arms and sold on t-shirts, shoes and billboards.

In 2012, one of the California-based multinational companies, for example, used icon of Lord Buddha on the shoes, the perishable object, perhaps to accomplish the vested interest. The incident outraged the Tibetan and the Buddhist community since the company used the images for promoting a range of shoes with the Lord Buddha's images. Tibetans and Bhutanese Buddhists have written to the company, Icon Shoes, to express their disgust. They have flooded the company's Facebook page with protest notes.

The International Buddhist Community had to issue a note addressing to the concerned business houses, designers and production companies immediately stop using any type of Buddhist images on any of their goods. The community requested the concerned companies to pull-out all existing catalogs from their retailers or online shops and stop selling such goods which is against the sentiments of all Buddhist around the world. Additionally, they also informed that they wanted any companies to repeat such a disrespectful act.

Similarly, the image of Jesus Christ has been used to influence the individuals to wine culture. The myth of Christianity— Jesus mixed water and fire to make the wine, has been misused to promote the culture of alcoholism. The board (in the picture) shows Jesus holding a can of Budweiser between the phrases, "King Of Jews" and "King Of Beers which is ultimately backing the same vested interest.

Such incident, that had taken place in the early year of 21 st century in Baltimore, Maryland, created havoc and that was eventually defaced with white paint after complaints from a local radio station, but similar incident recurred after few years as a propagandists' business formula.
In shops around Kathmandu, one can see jumble of the religious things like the book of Veda, Ramayana, Mahabharata, Swasthani, the statue of the gods and goddesses and the everyday necessities together. During Tihar festival at Lagankhel area, even I had seen the posters of deities in frame just under the pieces of recently killed buffalo or pig—both for the same purpose, i.e, selling.
In all these instances mentioned above, what seems dominating is the influence of growing capitalism that has corrupted human society. What satisfies the modern people is the materialistic gain in the quickest even at the cost of selling the gods and spiritualism. Using icons of deities, tattooing them and printing them or competing for selling the worshiping materials or selling their images as other goods of everyday needs; or visiting their shrines contrary to their philosophy with some declaration for donation have eventually promoting the same selfish agenda of backing capitalism through consumerism. Therefore, now I conclude, every other thing has become pale and fragile under the influence of capitalistic ideology.

Experimental experimentation (Review)

Raj Kumar Baral, Dec 26, 2015-
Although some friends recommended me not to wallow on Kumar Nagarkoti’s Mistika, with its loose and baggy plotline, twisty narrative and a bizarre story structure, I decided to pick it up nevertheless. Encouraged, perhaps, by my experience of excavating highly experimental western texts like Ulysses by James Joyce and V by Thomas Pynchon, though in several attempts, I was ready to commit to deciphering Nagarkoti’s latest offering.

Writing this review, I am mindful that many may charge me of being regressive and not accepting new trends in literature, rather still advocating a straightforward movement of the story—alienating modern trends in fiction writing. More importantly, writing this review, I am preparing  to committing suicide! The writer Nagarkoti, himself, in the very novel quotes reviewers who profess, “rather than reviewing Nagarkoti’s texts, it is better to commit suicide.” But I am prepared to face the charges, and commit self-murder in the name of literature.

Writer of any genre should either embrace changes to stay relevant or be ready to lag behind.  Nagarkoti is well aware of this fact and therefore he experiments with new trends of literature by rambling on this and that, pilling digression upon digression, instead of delivering a discernible story.  True to that nature of experimental fiction, Mistika, Nagarkoti’s first novel, as in his previous texts like Fossil, Akchyargunj, and Coma: A Political Sex, too goes beyond the boundaries of traditional realistic fiction, and veers away from reality. It, instead, experiments with black magic, mysticism, surrealism, which directly challenges the hitherto existing trend/criterion of writing fiction.   But the primary problem of Nagarkoti’s novel is his over-stretched and unrelated narratives, which the reader struggles to link up. The story without a decipherable link—be it in the form of symbols or images, if not thematic—frustrates the readers, who, at least, spend hours in the intellectual, as well as imaginative labyrinth of the story(ies). This undoubtedly has forced many a reader (my friends included) to put down the book, leaving it unfinished.

His only strength lies in the creation of some abstract characters, who partake in intellectual and philosophical discussions and thereby breathe life into the text. The use of pun and play of the words, however, has added some literary taste to the text. Had there been no such characters invited in the Dream Valley, and paradoxes and puns not used, the novel would have been a fiasco.

Among the four spectrums of fiction—history, realism, romance and fantasy, as critic Robert Scholes’ forwards—this novel represents one extreme, that is, bringing the readers to a world of fantasy. A fog named Kundalini, regular conversations between a telephone and a typewriter, writer’s desire to make a film entitled Taste of Vagina, black cats appearing here and there, the hypothetical Dream Valley, all are the creations of the author’s fantasy. His treatment of the theme of sex; masturbation in the bushes, sex with kichkanya—a ghostly image, whispering scenes, the black cats, the journey towards Euphoria, are highly imaginative. To quote the critic Scholes again, “. . . only a recording angel, taking note of all the deeds of men without distorting or omitting anything, could be called a “pure” historian. And only a kind of deity, creating a world out of his own imagination, could be called a “pure” fantasist. Both ends of the spectrum are invisible to the mortal eyes.” Ambitious Nagarkoti, in the book, has tried to visualise, fantasise and play God by creating everything out of his imagination. That, perhaps, is the book’s saving grace.

Linguistically, Nagarkoti has decimated the standard of Nepali language used in literature. General code mixing and figurative representation are ‘expected’ in experimental fiction but in the name of ‘poetic license,’ he has overdone it by mixing almost half a dozen languages together—Nepali, English, Hindi, Sanskrit, and Nepangreji.  He has not only used a few words or phrases from other languages, rather he has written paragraphs after paragraphs. Language lovers have been disappointed at the seemingly wanton use of different languages—some even going as far as to rejecting to call the book a Nepali novel.  Though this book that can be read in any order, with chapters that can be left out or left in, depending on the mood of the reader, though it redraws generic as well as some conceptual boundaries, though it has poetic prose (though intruded by other languages), it  does not attract the reader. And keeping these things in mind, my position is unlike that of poet and critic Pablo Neruda, who famously wrote vis-à-vis William Cortazar’s texts—“People who do not read Cortazar are doomed. Not to read him is a serious invisible disease.” Even after serious and several efforts by readers, the desire to understand the mystery of Mistika remains unfulfilled, leaving many readers frustrated.

This complicated experiment, however, should not dishearten the author. After all, not every experiment is necessarily successful, and it is only through trials and errors that masterpieces are created.

Nepal Magazine Kartik 15 2072

[अनुवाद] Alice Walker's story "Am I Blue's translation as "किन दुख्छ मलाई त्यस बन्दी घोडाको आँसु?"

"So many Selves" [Review on Dhungana's Ghazal Anthology "AAFAIN BHITRA" (2072-06-23)

'Ghazal,' an ancient form of poetry, practiced in the Middle East since long before the birth of Islam, mostly explores the theme of unrequited love. Oxford Dictionary defines it as "a lyric poem with a fixed number of verses and a repeated rhyme, typically on the theme of love and normally set to music." Today the form, having expanded its horizons, incorporates themes of not only 'love' but also the larger issues around pain and loss.  Made of rhyming couplets with  structural, thematic and emotional unity, modern ghazals can be used by skilled poets to express almost everything.
In his second anthology, Gopi Krishna Dhungana has used ghazals to explore his own self and the selves we create amid this flux called reality, and thus the title of the collection- Aafai Bhitra- which comprises fifty-two poems altogether.  Dhungana's poems oftentimes paeans to the nation, nature of god, but primarily work as vehicles through which the poet achieves catharsis. Some of the poems are also used to express anger against political, social, cultural ills rampant in our surroundings and they call out the politicians'penchant for mudslinging and back-stabbing.
Some of Dhungana's more patriotic ghazals seemchillingly prescient given the milieu we are living in, and they shine a light upon our society's constructs, which lead to divisions and the creation of hierarchies. He calls for national unity despite our differences, for example, one ghazal entitled Chandi (Silver) Jhulne asks the Tarai and the Himalayan regions to come together and Dukhnuparcha Aaba warns about foreign interference if the nation cant take care of matters itself:
            Najogae jhuknasakxa Sagarmatha shira
            Mauka chhopi bidesile parlan lutuputu.
Buddhalai Bali is another political poem that asks Nepalese to shun violence and live up to the ideals of  by Lord Buddha.
The poet also explores the usual ghazal fare- romantic love, usually among youngsters-- and all trials and tribulations that they have to live through. Perhaps the form does not allow the cynicism and weariness, when it is used to explore the theme of love, Dhungana's love poems mostly sing the praises of the beloved.

Although ghazals mostly try to make the mundane transcendent or sometimes elevate quotidian pain into tragic pathos, Dhungana does not desist from creating poetic material out of the lived stories that made up our daily grind: even isuues such as unemployment and inflation get the ghazal treatment. Dhungana seems to be attempting to widen, at least for himself, the scope that the form can be used to encompass --to transform the ghazal into a poetics of the people.
But despite his willingness to work with novel themes, Dhungana does not attempt to give too experimental with his prosody. Every title of the anthology begins with the first two words of the first line, a practice that is  acceptable in the recent ghazal writing circles. Out of fifty-two poems , fourteen ghazals have four shers (couplets), twenty-two have five, eight have six, and remaining eight have seven shers. Almost all the ghazals have used full rhyming and a few have used partial rhyming kafias (the words before the radeef). Undoubtedly, the use of radeef  adds a certain harmony to the compositions, but the executions are not flawless. There is also the matter of the poet's drawing from eclectic influences--a technique that great experimental poets can pull off with elan when the going is good--but the mixing of folk sensibilities with English words in Dhungana's creations sometimes comes across as instances of overcoming.
To break the monotony, the poet could perhaps opt for more stylistic variations in his future collections. The poet does have a way with proverbs, idioms, and phrases, using them in supple configurations to produce a novel euphony, and thus holds much promise.
